EUREKA - The Next-generation Open Science Platform

Science seeks to extract knowledge and insights from structured and unstructured data. This field encompasses statistics, data analysis, machine learning and other advanced methods used to understand and analyze actual processes using data.

Science publishing is very different than blogging. We expect these articles to be peer-reviewed, proofread, and professionally copy-edited. We expect them to be archived and indexed, and much more. While this naturally slows down the publishing process, there is still so much untapped potential provided we can overcome the historic barriers to publication.

One reason why publishing is slow and expensive is that a lot of effort is required to execute the process from submission to publishing. For example, submissions today are still mostly done by sending a Word file to the journal. These files are unsuitable for display in a browser and have no uniform structure, so a lot of manual converting is necessary. You can also imagine that reviewing and revising by sending and receiving Word files is cumbersome and far from the elegance that you can expect from tools such as Medium or Google Docs. Indexing services require the manuscripts submitted to publishers to have a very specific format and enforce strict rules. This increases the hours of work needed per manuscript and drives the article processing costs up.

Every Medium post has a consistent style and does not need manual processing, because the website allows authors of posts to write using an online editor. This creates intelligent boundaries and defaults in order to ensure that articles look streamlined. Unfortunately platforms such as Medium and Google Docs are not suitable for writing scientific manuscripts as these documents make use of a lot more features than a blogger would need. This is why implementing features such as powerful citation management, complex tables and equations is hard on the web.

This is where smart contracts come in. Smart contracts are programs hosted on a blockchain such as Ethereum, which allow anybody to input data and then process this data in a decentralized way while still adhering to predefined boundaries. Anyone could build an open science publishing layer on the blockchain and allow someone else to use it, leading to a standardized structure between journals.

EUREKA is proposing an online blockchain-powered scientific review and rating platform to circumvent the roadblocks that have been set in place by the current publishing system. EUREKA revolutionises the scientific publishing and reviewing process by making it more efficient and fair using the EUREKA token to compensate all parties involved. Scientific discoveries can now be openly rated and rewarded based on the quality of the research.

EUREKA exploits blockchain technology and smart contracts to enable a more efficient and trustworthy publishing process by introducing time stamping for discoveries, rewarding reviewers, editors and referenced authors and decentralising publishing. The EUREKA Token (EKA) is a utility token and is a ERC20 combined with ERC667 token, thus it will follow token standards provided by the Ethereum protocol, meaning it can be sent and received in transactions on the Ethereum ecosystem.

The Eureka Reward System

The REWARD system will be at the core of its operation. It is modeled to address the fundamental issues deep-rooted in the scientific research process: Revelation, Evaluation, Worth Assignment, Award, Replication, Data Analytics.

  • Revelation Time Stamping of Scientific Data

Scientific observations are timestamped, hashed and recorded on the Ethereum blockchain. This gives the author or inventor immediate ownership rights, and ensures scientists’ and researchers’ discoveries are tamper-proof.

  • Evaluation Peer-to-Peer Evaluation

Scientific observations undergo crowdsourced, peer-to-peer reviews which are transmitted and recorded on the EUREKA platform. The EUREKA platform will make use of crowdsourced wisdom and reviewers to get fast, accurate evaluations of the work, instead of being restricted to one or two reviewers, as is common practice.

  • Worth Assignment Rating

The EUREKA platform’s crowdsourced scoring of scientific work will provide researchers as well as publishers with a new metric that can be used to evaluate submissions more swiftly. Preprints or observations with ratings and reviews will be archived through the EUREKA decentralised and distributed system. In cases where the author wants to publish in a traditional journal, the scores can be transferred to the journals. The test scores are also available to funders, universities and prize or awards committees.

  • Award Funding Research, Career, Awards and Prize

EUREKA will have the first blockchain-based scientific rating system, preprint server and single observation platform that provide reliable, immutable scores and data that can be transferred on the blockchain to funders, institutions and directly to journals. Sources of funding could make decisions based on ratings and reviews on the EUREKA platform.

  • Data Analytics AI-based Prediction

An artificial intelligence-based prediction tool will make use of ScienceMatters’ algorithm which identifies related studies and observations by cross referencing annotations and links them to form a narrative. This technology could be leveraged to predict targets for drug development.

By providing such a blockchain-powered ecosystem, not only is EUREKA enabling a more efficient and trustworthy science publishing process, but it is also ensuring that researchers get compensated for their contributions, be it in the form of scientific discoveries or their evaluation, through the issuance of smart contracts.
