School of Life: Hegel
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was a philosopher of the school of idealism.
Hegel wrote very long books which were particularly difficult to read. This has led to his philosophical influence being not as widespread as it could have been.
For that reason I am glad that we can see a summary of his work in this video. I'm encouraged to explore further, as many of his points align with my own thoughts. What is the role of the institution? How does dogma serve us? These types of questions are addressed.
I often feel that many of our modern problems are associated with our flagrant disregard for the past. History contains the lessons. Old ideas are not out-dated. A good idea can fall out of favor, or be lost in the chaos of human history. These ideas can be ressurected and serve us again.
I'm hopeful you will see the value in Hegel's own thoughts on these ideas.
The summarised points of the video are:
- Important parts of ourselves can be found in history.
- Learn from ideas you dislike.
- Progress is messy. (The dialectic.)
- Art has a purpose.
- We need new institutions.
